“Turn right to go left.” In Pixar’s movie Cars, the wise and seasoned Doc Hudson tries to help the young and brash Lightning McQueen turn at high speed on a dirt track. At first, this advice seems ridiculous, but over time, as he begins to trust Old Doc, McQueen learns that it is sound.
Advent begins with Preparation. For many, preparation means making lists of all we think we need to do, and then frantically getting it done. But what if preparation for Christmas actually required a “doing less to have more” kind of approach? Just as Jesus said, that the first will be last, and the greatest will be a servant, the Prophet Malachi reminds us that the best way we can prepare for Christmas is to do less, to have more.
